A Popeye's Restaurant could be coming to the building that once housed Nellie Kelly's in the Town of Poughkeepsie.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Town Board will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 3 on the proposal to build a Popeye's at 55 Haight Avenue. The Town Board voted unanimously during its Jan. 6 reorganization to set the public hearing date.

During Town of Poughkeepsie Planning Board's Dec. 17, 2015 meeting, the governing body submitted a positive recommendation to the Town Board for the approval of a Main Street Drive-In Overlay District designation for the project. The designation is needed allow a drive-in for the Popeye's Restaurant, since the existing structure doesn't currently have one.

If the Town Board approves the designation after the public hearing, the issue returns to the Planning Board, which will have to vote on final site plan approval before construction can begin.

The location has been vacant since Nellie Kelly's closed in 2014.
