Police are searching for the dog and its owner.

On Sunday, January 21, 2018 the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a vicious dog in the vicinity of Melody Lake Drive on the Town of Thompson/Forestburgh line.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. a woman was walking with her three dogs when the pit bull approached. The pit bull attacked the woman and two of her dogs, fatally injuring one of them.

A good Samaritan stopped to help the woman and distracted the dog long enough for it to break off the attack and run away.

The woman was transported to a local hospital and treated for lacerations.

Deputies are now searching for the dog and its owner. The animal is described as a large gray pit bull with a red collar.

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of the dog or it's owner are asked to call the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office at (845) 794-7100 or the confidential tips line at (845) 807-0158.
