New Laws and Bills in New York To Look Out For in 2023

With the start of a brand new year comes new laws that will be set into place. While some of them are beneficial to most residents of New York state, others may think differently.

New laws are always something that can be debatable within the community. Sometimes we can come together and agree to disagree. Residents may be shocked at the new laws that will be set into place as some of them will make a significant change, for the better.

As of January 1, 2023, some of these new laws have taken effect already. How will it have an impact on your life in the new year?

New Laws Coming To New York In 2023

There are several laws that will be put into place.

According to ABC 7 NY,

Minimum Wage Increase

Those who are making minimum wage have good news coming their way. NY.gov outlines that as of December 31,

"All employees in New York State [shall] recieve at least $14.20 an hour."

 

The wage of New York state employees ultimately does come down to the worker's industry and what region they are employed in. But this law requires the minimum wage to incrementally increase each year until the minimum wage is $15.00 per hour.

The Paid Family Leave Act Was Expanded

There was an expansion of this recent law pertaining to families and time off. In November, Governor Kathy Hochul ensured siblings would now be covered as well under New York's Paid Family Leave Act according to NY.gov.

The website shares that Paid Family Leave allows,

"working families [to] not have to choose between caring for their loved ones and risking their economic security."

New Yorkers will want to check with their chosen insurance policies for information on when this goes into effect specifically for them.

There Is A New Safety Awareness Requirement

Do you know someone who is about to get their driver's license? They will have to complete a new requirement to do so according to Governor.NY.gov. In order to get your license in New York State, you will need to learn a pedestrian and bicycle safety component.

Governor Hochul believes,

"This law will help prevent crashes and save lives, and I thank my partners in the Assembly and Senate for passing this legislation to make our streets safer."

 

Changes Will Be Made In New York Airports

Looking for privacy in an airport? You're not the only one, good news is on its way! Governor.NY.gov shares that airports will now be required to have "lactation accommodations" areas for new breastfeeding parents.

Governor Hochul states,

"By signing this into law, we will continue to make New York a better place to safely and securely raise young children."

 

College Athletes Will Have More Opportunities

A new law will be set into place to make the lives of college athletes in New York state, easier.

According to Fox5NY,

"A new law allows New York's college athletes to make money from endorsements without the fear of losing scholarships or eligibility. It allows student-athletes to receive compensation, including for the use of their name, image, or likeness. They can also seek professional representation."

 

Nursing Homes Will Have More Requirements

Having a family member or friend in a nursing home in 2023 will be different. Thankfully, this new legislation signed by Hochul in early December will allow residents to feel safer and more protected.

Legislation (S.1785A/A.6052) is inspired by the already-in-place pandemic emergency plan.

According to NY.gov, this legislation will,

"require residential health care facilities to swiftly update residents as well as their family members and guardians when an infection is detected within the facility."

It also mandates that these facilities have a plan in place under the circumstance that a resident does catch an infection. They must be prepared to prevent the spreading of said infection.

A Change Will Be Made In Regards To Pay Transparency

Employers will have to provide potential candidates with vital information in 2023. Hudson Valley Post reported on December 21st regarding New York's new Pay Transparency Law.

According to Hudson Valley Post,

"The new legislation requires employers to list all salary ranges for all advertised jobs and promotions across New York State"

 

No More Robocalls? Telemarketers Will Give Customers An Option

In 2023, we may receive more privacy options. In early December, Hudson Valley Post shared the news about New York state's newest commitment to crack down on telemarketers. This bill allows those receiving these unwanted calls to be added to a "do-not-call" list.

Voting Reform Will Provide New Yorkers With Better Voting Process

Voters have been looking for tighter laws and in 2023, they may receive them.

According to Fox5 NY,

"A new law will protect New Yorkers' right to vote and improve the voting process. It requires the counting and canvassing of affidavit ballots cast by eligible voters who appear at the wrong polling place, as long as they are voting in the correct county and assembly district."
