It seems that all over the Hudson Valley these days there are new trails popping up to walk on for leisure and exercise. The latest trail to open can be found at the bottom of town in the Village of New Paltz. The River to Ridge Trail takes you from the Wallkill River on the West side of New Paltz to the base of the breathtaking Shawangunk Ridge. Recently completed, this trail is really spectacular because when starting out on it from the edge of town you can actually see off in the distance what you are heading for making even more inviting.

This trail begins in a picture-perfect spot, I say that only because I witness people taking pictures and selfies at it daily. Most choose sunset because it heads west and the views and dramatic evening skies create the most amazing backdrop for a photo. I have not had the opportunity to walk the trail but it is definitely on my fall to do list. If you choose the late summer, early fall season on the trail you can start out with a view of the sunflowers that line Route 299 thanks to the folks at Wallkill View Farm.

If you are interested make sure you join the Trail Grand Opening celebration on September 8th from 10am to 3pm hosted by River-to-Ridge Trail. The event will be held at the trailhead at 41 Springtown Rd in New Paltz. They expect a crowd so carpooling or possibly parking further away in and walking to the trailhead will make it easier to enjoy the event. This event will be held rain or shine.
