Man Murdered While Grocery Shopping in New Windsor

A normal weekend trip to the grocery store turned into anything but normal when police say a man murdered another man at a Hudson Valley ShopRite.

Saturday morning, the New Windsor Police Department responded to a ShopRite located at, 384 Windsor Highway, New Windsor for a report of a stabbing in the store.

Authorities say they found an unconscious man inside the store. The victim, a 35-year-old from Highland Falls, was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital Newburgh by New Windsor Emergency Medical Service where he was later pronounced dead.

The New York Daily News reports the victim is Michael Kohus.

Police sealed the store with about 250 people inside. Authorites say the suspect attempted to blend in with other shoppers.

Less than an hour after the reported stabbing the alleged suspect was located inside the store by officers and taken into custody.

Police charged 35-year-old Andrew Goodenough, from New Windsor, with 2nd-degree murder. He is being held being held in the New Windsor Police Department lock up pending arraignment.

CBS News reports that there is no connection between Goodenough and the deceased. There was no altercation or argument prior to the stabbing.

Goodenough allegedly silently walked behind the victim in the produce aisle, sliced his neck with a box-cutter, and walked away.

Goodenough lives within walking distance of the crime scene. Neighbors tell CBS he was very unstable, with a short temper, and would make threats of violence.

The investigation is ongoing. Police say they still don’t know the motive.

Goodenough is due in court on Thursday.
