FISHKILL – Joan P. Miller, a Dutchess County resident since 1970, died on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. She was 83.
Daughter of the late Benjamin and Betty (Lekstutis) Platt, she was born in Brooklyn on June 1, 1933.
On February 7, 1951, she married life long sweetheart, Hubert “Bud” A. Miller in Queens, New York. After nearly 60 years of marriage, Joan was predeceased by her husband in 2010.
She worked in hotel management for many years, including local hotels such as the Holiday Inn and Residence Inn, both in Fishkill. She retired in 1988. Joan was happiest and most proud when she spent time with her 4 grandchildren. Joan enjoyed many hobbies including reading and playing cards. She was an active member of the community, and spent countless hours volunteering for the V.A. Medical Center at Castle Point along with being involved as a recreational coordinator in her community residence.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Slackman & her husband Lloyd of Briarcliff Manor; her daughter, Susan Todd of Fishkill; her son, Jerry Miller & his wife Nicole of Croton-on-Hudson; her grandchildren, Christopher Marotta, Matthew Todd, Katie Miller, and Jake Miller; her brother, Robert Platt & his wife MaryLou of New York City; and many nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives & friends.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 26th at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A funeral service will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 27th at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in the Community Mausoleum at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
