Following a debilitating injury an accomplished local Police K-9 retired early.

With “great sadness,” the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department announced the retirement of K-9 Robbie, an 8-year-old German Shephard. Recently, Robbie suffered a devastating injury to his left front leg, which required amputation and forced him into an unanticipated career ending retirement.

Robbie spent his seven-year career with Police Officer Raymond Marino. The pair completed Basic Patrol School in June of 2009. In 2010, the team earned certification form the North American Police Work Dog Association and the National Narcotics Detector Dog Association in both patrol and narcotics detection.

In 2011, they earned certification from the Eastern Police Canine Association (EPCA) in Patrol and Street Ready Police Dog and Patrol Narcotics Dog Level 1.

The following year they earned the advanced titles of Certified Police Dog Level 1 and Patrol Narcotics Dog Level 2.

Then in 2013, K-9 Robbie earned the most advanced patrol dog title in the country, EPCA’s certified Police Dog Level 2. Twenty-six K-9 teams in the Northeast competed for the certification with only two teams receiving the high standard for certification.
