Hudson Valley Grocery Stores Busy With Coronavirus Shoppers
Local supermarkets were overrun with customers this week, stocking up on essentials.
Earlier this week the CDC recommended older citizens stock up on food so they could avoid venturing out amid the coronavirus outbreak. Anyone who's been to the grocery store in the past few days will tell you that the warning is certainly being followed.
On Thursday morning Stop and Shop in Poughkeepsie was filled with customers loading up their carts. Personal care items like toilet paper and cleaning supplies were some of the more popular items being purchased. Proteins also seemed to be on everyone's shopping list. Ground beef, chicken and other fresh meats were missing from many shelves. Milk, bread, soup and other popular "snowstorm" foods were being quickly bought up as well.
Some supermarket workers are comparing this week to the week before Thanksgiving, traditionally one of the busiest times of the year.
While some items were selling quickly, there is still plenty of food to go around. Just further down the road, Shoprite in Poughkeepsie was fully stocked with ground beef, chicken and all of the necessities. It's important to remember that local stores are constantly being restocked, and there's no indication that supplies will stop coming anytime in the future.
It's a good idea to be prepared, but also important not to buy more than you really need. You don't want to wind up like those people who are still eating their way through a huge supply of Y2K canned beans.
Have you stocked up on supplies over the past week? If so, what do you have on hand in case of a quarantine? Tell us in the comments section below or on our Facebook page.
