Hudson Valley 'Concerned' After Omicron Variant Reaches Region

The first case of the new COVID variant has been confirmed in the Hudson Valley.

On Tuesday, Westchester County Executive George Latimer confirmed the Omicron COVID variant was found in the Hudson Valley.

“Earlier this afternoon we were informed that there is a confirmed case of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in Westchester County. The positive case is in a 13-year-old Westchester County resident," Latimer stated.

Officials did not provide details about the child. It's unclear if the boy is vaccinated, where the boy lives, how he may have gotten COVID, or his symptoms.

However, Latimer says he's worried that the new variant has made its way to the region.

"We are concerned about this discovery, and are closely monitoring the situation," Latimer added. "With the new variant circulating, the best way we can protect our families and ourselves is by being vaccinated, and by getting a booster shot if you are eligible."

Also on Tuesday, Latimer signed a State of Emergency Executive Order for Westchester County. As of now, there won't be any changes or mandates, but the proactive measure will give Latimer more say over the county's COVID response if needed.

“Additionally, I have officially signed the State of Emergency Executive Order for Westchester County. I am taking this action to combat the Delta and Omicron COVID variants. There is currently a public health threat, I know it has been many months, I know you are tired but we - together - must take action to be better prepared to fight COVID and the new variants," Latimer said.
