Almost 3 years ago, in late spring of 2015, a national article caught our eye as it named a favorite swimming hole here in the Hudson Valley as one of the best in the entire country. As a result of such publicity and articles going viral online, the Peekamoose Blue Hole has been overrun with visitors leaving garbage, human waste, and trampling the surrounding areas.

With over 1,000 visitors a day, local residents have had a hard time getting around as people seemed to park their vehicles wherever they wanted. With such a beautiful treasure facing its demise because it was too popular, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced the Peekamoose Blue Hole Stewardship Program for the summer of 2018.

They want visitors to enjoy it, but not destroy it. This summer there will be two stewards at the trailhead to help visitors and give them information on how to enjoy the area responsibly. The Adirondack Mountain Club is providing 'Leave no Trace' training for the stewards to help protect the natural resources and to enable everyone to have a safe and fun experience while there.
