With September here and fall approaching, hunting season is officially upon us.

Earlier this week on Tuesday September 5th, The Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Basil Seggos, announced the start of early bear hunting season in New York State.

Bear hunting season will start on September 9 in Southeast New York and run until September 24. Hunting will be open in Wildlife Management Units (WMU) 3A, 3C, 3H, 3J, 3K, 3M, 3P, 3R, 4P, and 4R. In northern New York bear hunting will begin on September 16 and end on October 16 in the WMU 5A, 5C, 5F, 5G, 5H, 5J, 6C, 6F, 6H, and 6J.

Early bow bear hunting starts in Southern New York on October 1st and in the Northern zone on the 16th of September.

For the regular firearms season in the southern zone starts November 18th and on October 21 in the northern zone.

Seggos said in a press release "Black bears are an important and natural component of New York's ecosystem, and early black bear hunting seasons are a critical tool for managers to control and maintain healthy bear populations across the state."

Since bears are feeding heavily this time of year Seggos suggests increasing their bear sighting odds "by keying in on concentrated natural food sources."

You can find more details about bear hunting season at the DEC website.
