In an attempt to keep New York waterways free from congestion, digital billboards are now banned on the Hudson River and beyond.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation Tuesday that prohibits vessels from operating, anchoring or mooring in navigatable waters while operating a digital billboard or any other type of billboard that uses flashing, intermittent or moving lights.

The new legislation gives communities the ability to take action on vessels anchoring or mooring within 1,500 feet of its shores.

Senator Brad Hoylman had this to say, 'Billboards belong in Times Square, not in the middle of the Hudson and East Rivers. These floating billboards are a dangerous distraction to drivers, boaters, and pedestrians, not to mention an eyesore. New Yorkers deserve to have a respite on our waterfront from the barrage of modern life.'

Thankfully this has not been an issue in most riverside communities up until this point, but will hopefully prevent problems from arising in the future.
