On Monday, President Trump said normal economic activity across the U.S. will return in "weeks, not months." Trump also said, "our country was not built to be shut down."

His remarks highlight the growing divide between government health experts focused on stopping the spread of the virus and of others focused on Trump's re-election.

On Tuesday, Cuomo fired back, saying health experts believe many more people will die if the United States pulls back on efforts to contain coronavirus.

"If you ask the American people to choose between public health and the economy then it’s no contest. No American is going to say ‘accelerate the economy at the cost of human life," Cuomo said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Cuomo added he does agree it's unsustainable to close down the economy and continue to spend money, but it's not time to unpause New York or other states with coronavirus related lockdown.

"My mother is not expendable. Your mother is not expendable," Cuomo tweeted. "We will not put a dollar figure on human life. We can have a public health strategy that is consistent with an economic one. No one should be talking about social darwinism for the sake of the stock market. We are not willing to sacrifice 1-2% of New Yorkers. That’s not who we are. We will fight to save every life we can. I am not giving up."

Cuomo warned the peak of the coronavirus is happening sooner in New York with much higher confirmed cases, which in the governor’s words are a bad combination of facts.

Later on Tuesday, Trump announced he would love to see the U.S. fully open again by Easter. Dr. Anthony Fauci said that date "is very flexible" and they still need to look at data they haven't seen before.
