Counties in the Region Urge Others To Stay Away
Three counties from the region are asking people from any other area to stay away.
Last week, Sullivan County Public Health Director Nancy McGraw and Sullivan County Manager Joshua Potosek jointly issued "A Message to Our Downstate Friends, Visitors, Weekenders and Second Homeowners." The message told people from outside the region to stay away.
"Travel into Sullivan County from any area at this time is inadvisable and is highly discouraged," the message read.
As of Thursday, there are 53 confirmed coronavirus cases in Sullivan County. 14 new cases were announced on Thursday.
“Sullivan County currently has multiple cases of COVID-19 (2019 Novel Coronavirus) and is responding as aggressively and proactively as its limited resources allow. While you may be seeking refuge from the larger amount of cases downstate, you must be aware that this is a global pandemic. You and your family have a critical role to fulfill in halting the rapid spread of this potentially deadly virus, which can be dangerous and even fatal to the elderly and people with underlying health conditions," Potosek and McGraw said in the message.
As of Thursday, there are five confirmed cases in Greene County and seven in Delaware County. Both counties also asked non-residents to stay away during the coronavirus pandemic.
"The Greene County Legislature is echoing a statement made by our neighboring government officials in Delaware and Sullivan Counties," Legislature Chairman Patrick S. Linger wrote. "Travel into Greene County from any area at this time is inadvisable and is highly discouraged. While you may be seeking refuge from the larger amount of cases downstate, you must be aware that this is a global pandemic. You and your family have a critical role to fulfill in halting the rapid spread of this potentially deadly virus, which can be dangerous and even fatal to the elderly and people with underlying health conditions."
