Corrections Officer Punched in the Face at Green Haven
A visitor at a Hudson Valley correctional facility assaulted a female corrections officer last week.
According to a press release from Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville New York, on Friday, January 24th a female corrections officer was injured after she was assaulted by a visitor who "became agitated while waiting to be let out of the maximum-security facility."
The press release explains that the visitor was "banging on the door that separates the visiting room and lobby." The female officer opened the door to speak with the visitor and that's when the visitor "aggressively pushed her in order to get through the door. The officer attempted to close the door. The visitor grabbed the officer and punched her in the face."
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and was treated for a small laceration on her thumb, pain in the right ear, right hip and knee as well as swelling of her face and jaw.
Michael Mazzella, Mid-Hudson Region Vice President said in the press release "On a daily basis our members are attacked by violent inmates. We don’t expect that visitors, who are supposed to be law-abiding citizens, would attack staff as well."
Mazzella also adds "The State of New York needs to do more to protect law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day by having penalties that are more than simply a slap on the wrist.“
