Apex of COVID-19 in New York Expected at the End of April

"Another month of this," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday. The peak of coronavirus in New York appears to at the end of April with some cases still in July.

Cuomo noted people want to know when this will be over and what happens when it's over.

"No one knows for sure," he said. "I understand the need for closure, but nobody can tell you."

What you do know is facts, Cuomo noted. Facts are empowering, he claimed.

"I think that is empowering and in someways relaxing," Cuomo said.

The facts are there are now 83,712 confirmed COVID-19 cases in New York and 12,226 people currently hospitalized. Over 3,000 are in ICU and over 6,000 have been discharged.

The number of deaths in New York increased by nearly 400, up to 1,941. That number will continue to go up, Cuomo noted.

With minimal social distancing, the peak of the virus in New York now appears to be at the end of April, according to Cuomo, with some cases still arriving in early July.

"Which means another month of this," Cuomo warned.

It's believed the state will need 110,00 COVID beds and 37,000 ventilators, in the scenario with minimal social distancing.

With high compliance of social distancing, the peak of the virus in New York still will be at the end of April, according to Cuomo, with some cases still arriving in early July.

However, only 75,000 COVID beds and 25,000 ventilators will be needed.

"This is the difference between minimal social distancing and high compliance. Interestingly, both are pointing to an apex in April, just a lower need," Cuomo said.
