Three people are dead and two were seriously injured after a car led police on a high speed chase that started in the Hudson Valley.

On Saturday at around 4:20 a.m., a deputy form the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office spotted a white Nissan Maxima driving wildly and swerving over the center line on Route 6 in Southeast.

The officer assumed the driver was intoxicated and attempted to pull the car over. The car did not stop and continued driving as the officer pursued from behind with his flashing lights on.

Police say the suspect picked up speed as the car reached the New York/Connecticut border. The officer continued to follow as the driver entered Connecticut and called the Putnam County Sheriff’s headquarters to notify the Danbury Police Department to be on the lookout for the car.

About a mile into Connecticut, the Putnam County deputy slowed down and turned off his siren. Officials say the Nissan continued to increase speed and about 15 seconds later crashed into a pole at the Mill Plain Road and Milestone Road in Danbury.

Five people were inside the car at the time of the crash. The male driver and two male passengers were killed upon impact. Two female passengers were injured and transported to Danbury Hospital with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries.

The names of the victims aren’t being released at this time.

A police investigation determined the police vehicle was traveling over 65 miles per hour, with top speeds of over 80 MPH, during the chase. The crash speed of the Nissan has not been determined.

The sheriff’s deputy was not injured. He was taken to Putnam Hospital Center for observation and then released.
