Tops Friendly Markets have announced intentions to purchase five Hudson Valley Supermarkets from Stop & Shop and Hannaford. The deal hinges on approval from the United States Federal Trade Commission.

The deal is expected to be approved and will bring the total number of stores owned by Tops to 171, along with five additional owned by franchises. Tops operates in New York, Pennsylvania and western Vermont. These will be the first Hudson Valley stores for the company. Frank Curci, Tops Markets' chairman and CEO has this to say.

We are very excited about this growth opportunity for Tops, especially since these stores are a natural extension of our current footprint. We are looking forward to having these stores, the associates and the surrounding communities become part of the Tops family, and for both our customers and us, it will be business as usual.

There are more than 750 people employed at these Hudson Valley locations and zero jobs are expected to be lost. Tops plans to operate the new stores with no interruption of service. They do intend to re-brand the stores with Tops Markets banners and signage.

The effected supermarkets are as follows:

  • Hannaford - Wagner Way in LaGrangeville
  • Hanneford - Route 6 in Carmel
  • Stop & Shop - Route 9 in Rhinebeck
  • Stop & Shop - Main Street in New Paltz
  • Stop & Shop - Route 9 in Wappingers Falls
