SUNY New Paltz Student Dies While Hiking in Ulster County

A SUNY New Paltz student has died after a hiking accident in Ulster County.

According to the Kingston Police Department Facebook page, they received a call about a female hiker who had fallen near the caves along Hasbrouck Park.  Officers arrived at the scene and were able to locate a group of SUNY New Paltz students. 

Police officers were told that the group of students were a part of an "unsanctioned hiking group that was exploring the old cement caves and trails" in Ulster County. The group had started hiking around 6:30 pm on Monday night, November 18th.

During the hike the group had gotten lost and ended up near the edge of the cliff. The report states that one of the hikers, a 20-year-old female,  "slipped and slid off the edge of a cliff falling approximately 150 feet."

The girl fell near a part of the cliff that was only accessible by rope, but due to lack of light and poor weather conditions recovery efforts were put on hold until the daylight.

Kingston Police Department Emergency Services Unit has recovered the student's body and says she suffered "severe trauma from the fall and was pronounced dead at the scene."
