Peter Sanfilippo, Jr., a lifelong resident of the Village of Wappingers Falls, entered into rest Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 84.
Son of the late Peter and Mary Waichausky Sanfilippo, Sr. he was born August 2, 1932 in Wappingers Falls. He attended and graduated from Wappingers Central School. On December 29, 1951 at St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls, he married the love of his life, the former Jean McIntosh. Mrs. Sanfilippo survives at home in Wappingers Falls.
Prior to his retirement in 1990, he worked as an engineer at IBM in Poughkeepsie for 39 years. Pete has been volunteering almost his whole life. As his children were growing up, he coached CYO Basketball at St. Mary's and managed and coached Village and Town Little League from 1959 until 1975. He was a "founding father" of the MidHudson Road Runners Club. He directed and organized the Joseph McDonald/Bill Crusie Memorial Run since 1978, the Knights of Columbus Holiday Run, the Hall of Fame Run and the Mama & Papa Run/Walk all in Wappingers Falls. He has helped at countless other races over the years. He was a member of the WT Garner Fire Company in Wappingers Falls since 1950. Pete was a former Fire Inspector for the Village of Wappingers Falls. Together with is his wife, Jean were former longtime volunteers for Meals on Wheels in Wappingers Falls. Pete was named Dutchess County Senior Citizen of the Year in 2013.
He had a deep faith, and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls. Pete was also active in the Knights of Columbus, Council 1646 in Wappingers Falls since 1974. He was a Past Grand Knight, Past Faithful Navigator and served many other positions.
Most importantly, he loved his family. He cherished time spent together. He loved the Christmas season and was known for family traditions; especially celebrating Christmas Eve.
In addition to his wife, Jean, of nearly 65 years, he is survived by his children, Michael Sanfilippo and his wife, Rosalie of Beacon, Peter Sanfilippo, III and his wife, Terry of Poughkeepsie, Mark Sanfilippo and his wife, Lisa of Fishkill, and Jill DiPalma and her husband, Joe of Wappingers Falls; his siblings, Mary Johnson, Ronald Sanfilippo, Barbara (Dominick) Cocco, Doris (Philip) Dominicus, and Phyllis (John) Campala; his grandchildren, Peter John (Cara) Sanfilippo, IV, Amanda (Ray) Schulz, Danny Alexander, Ethan Sanfilippo, Noelle Sanfilippo, Joseph DiPalma, IV, Marissa DiPalma, and Michael DiPalma; his great-grandchildren, Chiara, Nicaletta, and Raymond Schulz, and Bella, Rocco, and Lucia Sanfilippo; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
He was predeceased by his great-granddaughter, Angel Sanfilippo; his sister, Patricia Miller; his brother-in-law, Joe Johnson; and his sister-in-law, Audrey Sanfilippo.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street in Wappingers Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7 at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls.
Memorial donations in Pete's name may be made to Knights of Columbus, Council 1646, 2660 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
