On Thursday, Gov. Katy Hochul launched two new web pages to provide expanded COVID-19 data. The first focuses on COVID-19 variants, providing public information on how we track variants, why we track variants and updated data.
Delta Variant
One day after telling New Yorkers the Delta variant is "sweeping through" New York, Gov. Hochul backed up her claim. Almost all new cases of COVID are from the more contiguous Delta variant.
For samples of SARS-CoV-2 collected between August 29 and September 11, from New York State that are sequenced and entered into Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID), 99.4% were the Delta variant, an increase from 99.0% in the previous two-week period.
Between September 11 and September 18, the CDC estimated 98.1% of samples were the Delta variant, compared to 98.2% in the previous one-week period.
Mu Variant
For samples of SARS-CoV-2 collected between August 29 and September 11, from New York State that are sequenced and entered into GISAID, 0.3% were the Mu variant. Between September 11 and September 18, CDC’s program for HHS Region 2 estimated 0.1% of samples were the Mu variant. The percent of specimens with Mu peaked in New York between mid-June and early July.
"The COVID-19 pandemic isn't over and it's critical that we continue to make progress getting shots in arms throughout the state to keep New Yorkers healthy and safe," Hochul said.
The second webpage includes the COVID-19 Breakthrough Data Report, which displays COVID-19 breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and in-depth data over time. CLICK HERE for more information
