Hudson Valley EMT ‘Unexpectedly’ Dies at Ambulance Headquarters

The Hudson Valley is mourning the loss of a beloved volunteer EMT.

Joey Zask passed away unexpectedly Saturday afternoon while at Stony Point Ambulance Headquarters, the Piermont Fire Department rights on Facebook.

"Members of the Piermont Fire Department would like to extend their prayers to the family of Joey Zask," the Piermont Fire Department states. "Joe was a regular here in Piermont and spent most of his free time with our membership during functions or Sunday morning department drills. May god bless you and your family Joey, we will take it from here!"

Zask worked for Rockland Mobile Care and was a volunteer EMT in Orange and Rockland counties, Cornwall and Stony Point.

"He volunteered on the ambulance more hours than I could ever count," Lia Papay wrote in a GoFundMe. "During COVID he was the biggest asset for birthday drive by parades and meet ups. He always wanted to be a part of the bigger picture. Unfortunately and unexpectedly, yesterday we lost one the best people in our lives and all of the people he touched."

Zask was found unresponsive on Saturday while working for Stony Point Ambulance Corps where he also volunteered, according to the Cornwall, NY Office of Emergency Management.

"Joey, affectionately known as 'chicken wing,' was disabled in his teenage years following a tragic accident which left him without use of one arm. He felt a calling to service before self, just as those had who rescued him on that fateful day. He joined COVAC in early 2020 to help our community out during the pandemic, contributing hundreds of hours of shift coverage as a driver of rig 325," Cornwall, NY Office of Emergency Management stated. "Joey touched many lives in service to our community through his unfaltering energy and determination."

The GoFundMe was created to help his family pay for his funeral costs. As of this writing, $2,575 dollars has been raised.
