On Tuesday during a COVID-19 briefing, Gov. Kathy Hochul discussed breakthrough COVID cases. A breakthrough case is when someone contracts COVID despite vaccination.

Breakthrough COVID cases in New York have only been reported in 0.5 percent of fully vaccinated New Yorkers, according to Hochul. Hochul confirmed 80.9 percent of New Yorkers have received at least one COVID vaccine.

Hochul added just 0.04 percent of fully vaccinated New Yorkers have been hospitalized with COVID.

"So it is still a rarity," Hochul said on Tuesday. "But this requires us to go back to being much more vigilant about mask-wearing. And even the hand-washing and the social distance. We have to go back to the beginning and continue to use those to help us fight back against this. So we don't have those numbers increase any more than they are."

However, Hochul noted COVID infections in New York are increasing again. The current statewide positivity rate is 3.34 percent. 2,415 New Yorkers are currently hospitalized with the virus, which is five times more than September 2020.

"Not a single person wants to relive the memories from last year, which is why we are 100 percent committed to doing everything in our power as we continue our battle with COVID," Hochul said. "We are watching the numbers like a hawk and while infections and other key metrics are ticking up, we know what it takes to beat back the virus. We need to double down on exercising basic safety measures like wearing our masks, handwashing, social distancing - and we need everyone to get vaccinated."
