Deadline to Take Down Christmas Lights Fast Approaching
Hudson Valley residents only have a few days left to take down their Christmas lights.
No one wants to be THAT person. You know, the person that everyone else in the neighborhood rolls their eyes at as they pass your home. Whether it's letting your grass grow way too long, keeping your garbage cans out at the curb for days or committing one of the worst neighborhood crimes known to man; leaving your Christmas lights up too long.
So, how long is too long exactly?
There is no law requiring anyone to remove lights from their homes by a specific date, although many people would probably vote for one if it was an option. Some people have their own rules about when Christmas lights should come down, while others just get around to doing it when they have time.
Most etiquette experts agree that Christmas lights should come down after the Christmas season is over. That date would officially be January 6. The most popular definition of the "holiday season" kicks off on Black Friday and ends on Three Kings Day.
The January 6 celebration signals the arrival of the Wise Men to meet baby Jesus. That's the date that most people agree ends the Christmas season, so it's also the date that etiquette experts say your lights should come down, or at the very least stay turned off after.
Here in the Hudson Valley weather can have an impact on the removal of Christmas lights, so it's important to plan ahead. For me, the lights all came down on January 1. I didn't want to have to worry about snow or ice freezing those strings of lights to my railing. With no snow currently on the ground or in the forecast for the next week, Hudson Valley residents have no excuse this year for keeping those lights up too long.
As of now, the weather is calling for rain on Saturday, with clearer skies towards the end of the weekend. So this Sunday should be the perfect day to take your lights down before the January 6 deadline. Of course, you can do whatever you like, but don't blame me when your neighbors snicker and sneer as you celebrate Valentine's day with festive red and green icicle lights dangling from your gutters.
