Residents are mourning the death of an Orange County teenager who was gunned down near a popular high school hangout, as he was preparing for college.

Just before midnight on Tuesday, City of Newburgh Police found 18-year-old Keyshan D. Gayle, of New Windsor on the ground dead from a gunshot wound in the area of Fullerton Avenue and Third Street.

“I am absolutely horrified that another promising young person has been taken from us too soon. Keyshan had just graduated and was preparing to go to college,” Representative Sean Patrick Maloney stated. “He was poised to open the next chapter of his young life, but he has been robbed of his future. My heart breaks for his family, friends and fellow graduates at Newburgh Free Academy.”

Police say Gayle suffered a single gunshot wound to his back. The shooting occurred near a deli that is very popular with Newburgh Free Academy students.

“We must stop burying our children,” Maloney said.

The fatal shooting is currently being investigated by City of Newburgh Police, New York State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information is asked to call City of Newburgh Police at 845-561-3131 or the City of Newburgh Police TIPS hotline at 845-569-7555.

“I am committed to ending senseless gun violence in Newburgh – so folks once again feel safe to open a business or raise a family here, Maloney said.”
