Be Aware of Springtime Scams

The weather is turning and many are getting to work on their spring cleaning. Some are fixing the outside of their homes and others are working on their lawns, either way, it could get expensive.

This could make finding a contractor a top priority for your family.

The Orange County District Attorney and Consumer Affairs Office wants to remind residents of possible scams that could be happening in your neighborhood.

In a press release, they warn of "traditional spring-time construction scams." Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said "If a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is." Hoovler adds, "Don’t trust a contractor who comes to your door soliciting business. Check references and get a written contract. Only pay for work in increments, as it’s being completed."

They say one of the most common scam involves blacktopping and usually the scamming contractor will have “unused load of blacktop and offers to roll it out on the homeowner’s driveway at a reduced price."

Here are some warning signs to look out for when it comes to springtime scams:

The contractor is aggressive and won’t take no for an answer or keeps trying to persuade you to give them the job on the spot.
The contractor offers you significant discounts for cash-only payments or “today-only” specials.
The contractor doesn’t provide a written contract.
