Be Aware of Notre Dame Scams

Unfortunately, we see disasters far too often. Some of us try to help out as much as we can even if the disaster isn't in the Hudson Valley.

Most recently the Cathedral of Notre Dame in France saw extensive damage due to a fire that ripped through the church. Afterwards people from near and far came together to collect donations to rebuild the parts of the famed church that were damaged.

A press release from The Ulster County District Attorney’s Division of Consumer Affairs sent out a reminder to use caution if you are contacted about donating to the Notre Dame.

The DA is warning residents to be wary if they are contacted about donating to Notre Dame and before making any donations to keep in mind the following:
• Not respond to any spam e-mail or click on links contained within those messages;
• Be skeptical of individuals representing themselves as survivors or officials asking for donations via e-mail or social networking sites;
• Verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations;
• Be cautious of e-mails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas in attached files because the files may contain viruses;
• Make contributions directly to known organizations rather than relying on others to make the donation on your behalf;
• Do not give personal or financial information to anyone who solicits contributions.

If you recieve an email you're not sure about you call call Consumer Affairs at 845- 340-3260 or forward the spam email to spam@uce.gov where it will be deleted.
