103-Year-Old Hudson Valley Veteran Passes Away
The Hudson Valley has lost a true hero.
Army veteran Stuart Vidal passed away at the age of 103 this week. The Poughkeepsie resident was born in 1916 and grew up in New Bedford, MA. He attended school until the 9th grade when he left to work as a golf caddy in order to support his family during the Great Depression.
Vidal was drafted in 1942 and served in World War II as an Army Sergent for six years. After his time in the South Pacific, he returned to work as an IBM security guard before retiring after 25 years. Vidal continued to serve his community as one of the founding members of the Poughkeepsie VFW Post 170. The energetic veteran was even driving his own car up until a few years ago.
Vidal was beloved by many people throughout the Poughkeepsie community for his kindness, humor, and goodwill. On his last birthday, Vidal received over 5,000 cards from all over the world, thanking him for his service and dedication to helping his community.
Because of the coronavirus outbreak, a memorial service for Vidal will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made in Stuart's name to the Hudson Valley Honor Flight, P.O. Box 375, Walden, NY 12586.
