So Kmart announced this week that they will be closing an additional 64 stores before end of the year. These closings are in addition to 68 stores that were announced to be closing earlier this year and have already taken place, ie the Kmart in Pougkeepsie's South Hills Mall.

Will any of the remaining Hudson Valley stores be affected? At this time, no, they will remain open. The Kmart stores still open in the Hudson Valley include:

  • 987 Route 6, Mahopac
  • Route 44, 635 Dutchess Turnpike, Poughkeepsie
  • 374 Windsor Highway, Vails Gate
  • 399 Tarrytown Rd, White Plains
  • Route 118 355 Downing, Yorktown Heights

Sears Holdings, the company that owns Kmart, has stated that the reason for the closure is that the brand has been unable to stay competitive with other mass market chains and online mega sites, like Amazon.com.

Kmart is not the only store this year to announce significant reductions to their store spaces, Macy's announced last month that they will be closing 100 of their 675 stores and Sports Authority also fell victim to competition, filing for Chapter 11 and closing all of their stores this year.
