Speranza “Nunnie” Anna Alonge, a lifelong resident of Washington Heights in Newburgh, NY, passed away Sunday December 18, 2016 at the age of 91. Nunnie was born on July 8, 1925 in Newburgh, NY and was the daughter of the late Dominick and Margharita DeMaria Bernardo. Nunnie was a retiree of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and worked as a seamstress for 61 years. She loved to get her hair done, go out dancing, and gather with friends at the diners. Around company, she brought laughter and smiles with her poems, jokes, and stories. Loved and cherished by many, she had a big heart, an open home, and regular invitations for good food and spicy conversation. Nunnie was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, who was always there when someone needed her. She will be greatly missed.

 

Survivors include her son Salvatore Alonge and his wife Victoria of Virginia, Frances Catania and her husband Paul of Marlboro, NY, Dominick Alonge of Virginia. Nunnie lives on through her six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Joseph, and James Alonge, Nicholas Catania, and Nicholas and Sophia Alonge. Nunnie also has five great-grandchildren, Lilly, Oliver, Claire, Isabella, Micaela, and many nieces and nephews. Nunnie was pre-deceased by her sister Patricia Felicello, brother-in-law Frank, brother Dominick “Sonny” Bernardo, daughter-in-law Tammy Alonge, and niece Susan DeRobertis.

Visitation will be held from 4 -8pm on Thursday, December 22 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Nunnie’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Friday, December 23 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Newburgh. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor,NY
