Sandwich Wrapper Leads to Apprehension of Illegal New York Hunter
He would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for that foot-long sub.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation went above and beyond when they responded to reports of illegal hunting activity. After receiving a call about a possible "deer jacking" incident, a DEC officer began investigating the scene, looking for clues as to who may have illegally taken a doe.
There's not much to go on when investigating a hunting scene, but the keen eye of officer Atwood picked up something that could possibly be a clue. After combing the area for anything suspicious, the officer collected a discarded sandwich wrapper and thought that it may possibly lead to the culprit.
After studying the wrapper, Atwood took a trip to a local store that sells sandwiches wrapped in the same packaging. There, he was able to obtain security footage of everyone who came in for sandwiches that day.
The footage was matched up with footage from a trail cam that captures vehicles entering the area where the incident allegedly took place. Officer Atwood was able to identify two customers at the store who were traveling in the same suspected vehicle that was filmed by the trail cam.
When confronted with the evidence, the DEC says the two individuals immediately confessed to illegally hunting the doe.
We all know that littering is wrong, but this time one person's disregard for the environment actually lead to their apprehension in an even worse crime. I don't know about you, but I think Officer Atwood needs his own TV spinoff. Be on the lookout for CSI: DEC coming soon to CBS.
