New York Cancels Republican Presidential Primary
New York State has cancelled the Republican presidential primary.
On the heels of the Democratic presidential primary, New York State has cancelled its Republican presidential primary. Why? no other candidate qualified to appear on the ballot, according to Politico. New York State only holds primaries if multiple candidates are on the ballot. This guarantees that President Donald Trump will win all of New York State's delegates.
While no one qualified for the primary, three Republicans did submit paperwork to run. According to Politico, former Massachusetts Governor William Weld, businessman Rocky De La Fuente, and former Illinois Rep. Walsh all submitted paperwork. However, De La Fuente and Walsh did not include the names of any delegates, which automatically disqualified them. Politico claims it was an academic experiment because Walsh dropped out of the race in February 2020. Weld submitted roughly half of the delegates required but failed to submit the remainder.
Despite the Republican primary being cancelled, Governor Andrew Cuomo has scheduled five special elections that day because of cost-saving reasons. Politico reports that State Senator Chris Jacobs, the Republican running to fill the congressional seat once held by Chris Collins, thinks that Cuomo scheduled the special elections the same day as the presidential primary so more Democrats vote than Republicans. Jacobs said “There will be Democrats coming out because there will be multiple presidential Democratic candidates."
The New York State Democratic presidential election and special elections will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
