New Law Introduced By Hyde Park Resident Makes It Past NYS Senate

When 19 year old Bailey Bates tragically committed suicide last summer his mother introduced a new law under his name. Bailey's Law was presented to the public in the form of a petition which now has over 10,000 signatures.

Bailey's Law increases the criminal penalty of those who endanger a person with disabilities including the elderly if it contributes to the victims suicide attempt. Bailey was asked to cash a check for a person he knew from his High School. Bailey is on the spectrum of autism and it was clear he was being taken advantage of when it turned out the checks were fraudulent. More details on that story can be found here.

Bailey's Law was sent to the New York State Senate and passed with a 41/17 vote. The next step is to send the bill to the NYS Assembly. If it passes there the bill will land in the Governors office.

They are still collecting signatures with a goal to reach 100,000. With the national attention this is gaining, it's possible those numbers could become a reality.
