The new jail will cost around $47 million.

According to WTEN and the Greene County Sheriff's Office, crews should be able to start the new construction on the new jail in the next couple of weeks.

The Greene County Sheriff closed the Greene County Jail last year citing structural and safety concerns for employees and inmates.

With the closing of the jail, the county has had to send inmates to other nearby jails until the construction is completed and that has come with a hefty price tag. Officials say that the county has spent $240,000 in 2019 sending inmates to other counties since the old jail closed.

Some of the specific of the new jail are still not finalized as at first it was supposed to be an 80-bed jail, but recently that was changed to 72, and officials say that may still go down even more to 64 beds.

The new jail facility will be located just off Route 9W in Coxsackie and once crews receive final approval from the DEC, construction will begin.
