Myron “Mort” Tompkins, a U.S. Navy Veteran, Dies at 80
Myron "Mort" Tompkins, a U.S. Navy Veteran and long-time resident of Highland, passed away at Vassar Brothers Medical Center on November 10, 2017. He was 80. The youngest of five children, he was born to Victor Bennett Tompkins and Eugenia Loungsbury on July 30, 1937. Myron married Dolores "Dee" Meyer in the summer of 1958. During his time in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1960, Myron served aboard the USS McCaffery (DD-860).
He was predeceased by his three brothers, Richard, Victor, and Walter "Jack" Tompkins; and his sister, Cassie Orlando. Myron is survived by his wife of 59 years of marriage, Dolores Tompkins of Highland; two sons, Jesse Tompkins of Marlboro and Joseph Tompkins of Newburgh; and daughter, Mary Jonietz of Clintondale; his eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; brother and sisters in law; and his loving cat companion, Lilly Belle.
At Standard Gage Company, Inc. in Poughkeepsie, NY, Myron stared in the stock room and proceeded to work his way up to Plant Manager, but retiring with a supervisory role after 37 years. Devoted, Myron's greatest achievement in life however was his family-from his siblings and grandchildren to those he called family on Tuckers Corners Rd.
Myron mostly enjoyed working on projects around the house, riding his motorcycle, bowling, and visiting with his fellow U.S Navy veterans. He also loved playing cards, softball, camping, and spending time with his family and friends. A life well lived, he will be missed deeply.
Calling hours will take place on Monday November 13th from 4-8pm at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. 38 Main St. Highland, NY 12528. Service will take place Tuesday November 14th, 10:00am at the funeral home with Pastor Tobias Anderson officiating.
Burial with Military Honors will take place in Highland Cemetery.
