John F. Eylers, Sr., A Poughkeepsie Resident, Dies at 78

John F. Eylers, Sr. 78 of Poughkeepsie passed away on Friday, September 16, 2016 at The Grand at River Valley in Poughkeepsie.
Born in Poughkeepsie on July 13, 1938, he was the son of the late Dirk and Emily Webb Eylers. On April 16, 1966 at St. Andrew's Church, Poughkeepsie, he married Janet M. Swartz. Mrs. Eylers survive at home.
John was employed by NYS DOT for 38 years before retiring. Following retirement he drove a school bus for YMCA for several years.
John worked hard his entire life. He always had a beautiful garden and taught his children how to garden and maintain the property. John loved his family and will be sorely missed.
In addition to his wife Janet , he is survived by his 3 children; Marie Locascio of Hyde Park, Mark Eylers of Gilbert, AZ and Janet Eylers of LaGrange; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; his brother, Rev. David Eylers of Harwinton,CT and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, John F. Eylers, Jr. on July 9, 2014.
Visitation will be Friday, September 23 from 11am - 1 pm and 7 - 9 pm at Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be held from St. James Episcopal Church, 4526 Albany Post Rd., Hyde Park on Saturday, September 24 at 11 am with The Dr. Rev. Paul Clayton presiding. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
