CBS is reporting that a 37-foot female humpback whale carcass washed up on the shores of a Long Island beach Sunday. The dead whale was discovered at Cupsogue Beach County in Westhampton.

According to reports this is the first dead whale to wash ashore in 2019 in New York. It is uncertain how the whale died, though the Southhampton Press says that no external injuries were witnessed on the carcass.

Fox NY says that 18 humpbacks died between 2016 and 2018 on the beaches of New York.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society spokeswoman Rachel Bosworth told WNBC that the dead whale would have to stay for at least a day as crews were going to have to round up the heavy equipment needed to remove the animal. Considering female humpbacks can weigh up to 30 tons, it is understandable that it will take some time to get it off the beach.
