Police say Poughkeepsie man hit a store clerk in the head with a beer bottle and then took money from the cash register.

Brent A. Johnson, 46, of the City of Poughkeepsie, was charged with first-degree robbery, a class B felony.

Police say on Tuesday around 12:20 a.m., Johnson walked into the 7-Eleven located at 266 Hooker Ave. took a bottle of beer from a cooler and walked to the counter. He then asked the store clerk about a job. When the employee turned his back Johnson allegedly went behind the counter and began striking the victim in the head multiple times with the beer bottle, knocking the employee to the ground.

Officials say the employee got up and ran out of the store. Johnson then took the cash register drawer, which is believed to have contained several hundred dollars. Johnson is said to have fled the area in a car going west on Hooker Avenue.

An investigation into the robbery led police to identify Johnson as the suspect. He was held pending his arraignment.
