The Columbia County teen was arrested following an investigation. 

On February 24, 2018, state police investigated a firearm reported missing from a residence in the Town of  Chatham.

State police initiated an investigation throughout the weekend, which resulted in the recovery of the firearm.

During the investigation, police became aware of a social media rumor causing alarm among Chatham area residents. There was no evidence at any stage of the investigation to a credible threat to the Chatham Schools or students.

State Police, Columbia County Sheriff's, and Chatham Central School officials have worked together closely sharing information, and monitoring any new developments.

On February 26, 2018, state police arrested a 15-year old Criminal Possession of a Firearm, if charged as an adult the crime would be a class E felony.

The investigation revealed the firearm missing from the residence was possessed by the juvenile illegally.

The teen was issued a Columbia County Family Court appearance ticket returnable at a later date.
