Poughkeepsie Man Accused of Bold Jewelry Store Theft in Newburgh

A trip to a Town of Newburgh jewelry store ended with a man facing a felony charge after police say he stole a gold necklace and ran out of the store.

According to the Town of Newburgh Police Department, it all started at approximately 6:51 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, when officers responded to a report of a theft at a jewelry store in Newburgh after a gold necklace was allegedly stolen.

Police said the incident happened at the Kay Jewelers store located on Route 300 in the Town of Newburgh.

Upon arrival, officers launched an investigation that revealed the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Kwasi Oronde of Poughkeepsie, allegedly entered the store and asked an employee to show him a gold chain. Police said that as the employee removed the necklace from a display case so Oronde could look at it, he allegedly grabbed the jewelry and ran from the store on foot toward Route 300.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate him.

The investigation didn't end there, however.

Detectives with the Town of Newburgh Police Department continued following leads and eventually tracked Oronde to a residence in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Police said the stolen necklace was recovered during the investigation.

Oronde was taken into custody and charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a felony. He was later released with an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Town of Newburgh Justice Court on July 20.

Town of Newburgh Police were assisted in the investigation by the City of Newburgh Police Department, Orange County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit, New York State Police, and the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center.
