DNA Match Leads to Burglary Arrest in Putnam County

A homeless Putnam County man was arrested for Burglary after a DNA match linked him to the crime.

On February 6, 2017, Kent Police recieved a call froma Lake Carmel resident reporting that he had arrived home from work around 2:30 a.m. The complaintant's wife and infant daughter were asleep and he noticed lights on in the residence that were usually off.

When the man walked into his living room, he noticed an unknown man standing in the corner of the room. The man stated that he was in the wrong house and fled the residence on foot.

Officers arrived with K9 support but were unable to locate the man. Detectives arrived to investigate. During the investigation, it was discovered that the unknown man went through the family's personal belongings, including the wife's pocketbook.

The suspect also used some items in the kitchen, and detectives were able to collect DNA, which was sent to Albany. DNA edvidence resulted in no matches.

Earlier this month, Kent Police recieved a notification that a DNA sample of 46-year old Andrew Hickey was sent to them on another matter matched the DNA that was submitted in February 2017.

On May 22, 2018, Hickey was arrested at the Town of Kent Justice Court. Hickey was at court for another criminal matter, and had been in Putnam County Correction Facility for a period of time for that crime.

Hickey was arraigned and remanded back to Putnam Couty Correction FAcility in lieu of $20,000 cash bail, or $40,000 bond.

Hickey is scheduled to return to court at a later date.
