The tragic ATV accident took place on Monday.

According to the Greene County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, a tragic accident that took place Monday afternoon on an all-terrain vehicle has claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl in the small Greene County town of Windham.

The Sherriff's office was called to a piece of private property off of Big hollow Road in the Windham/Maplecrest area on Monday at 1:29 p.m. to assist with an ATV accident. When deputies arrived on the scene they reported that there had been an accident involving two children that were operating an ATV.

ATV Accident Details

After investigating the scene, deputies found that the ATV was being operated by a 9-year-old boy with a 13-year-old female riding as a passenger, and as the male driver was trying to make a left-handed turn, he lost control of the ATV causing it to roll over. As the ATV rolled over, both riders were ejected and sadly the ATV landed on the female rider.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office did pronounce the girl passenger dead at the scene of the accident. The boy rider was transported to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries according to deputies. The Sheriff's department did say the investigation is still ongoing.

Town of Windham Police, New York State Police, Greene County Paramedics, the Hensonville Fire Department, Windham Ambulance, and the Windham Fire Department all assisted the Sheriff's Department on the scene.

Personally growing up in the Windham area, this tragedy hits extremely close to home. Riding ATVs through the mountains and valleys in Windham is something I've done many times and is something we all did as kids, it's awful when something like this happens. To do everything we can to prevent it from happening again, it is so important to make sure that parents are sure that any child allowed to ride alone is properly trained to do so.
