A Hudson Valley county leads the state in heroin overdose deaths according to a report released by State Comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli. Orange County had the percentage of heroin overdose deaths statewide killing at a rate of 12.5 people of every 100,000. Suffolk County had the most overall heroin related deaths with 111. The study is based on numbers from 2014, the most recent data available.

New York has a higher percentage of death than many states when compared to national averages. However, New York state residents are more likely to get treated for heroin use and prescription opioid abuse than other states. The reason is considered to be a higher percentage of insured individuals, leading to more insurance covered treatment options as well as the state's long term efforts to promote treatment.
