Herbert “Herb” W. Coon, of the Town of Newburgh, a retired Licensed Funeral Director for 60 years in the Mid-Hudson Valley, entered into eternal rest at his son’s home on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the age of 92.

The son of the late Herbert and Laura E. (Andersen) Coon, Herb was born on January 20, 1925 in Poughkeepsie, NY.

He graduated New Paltz High School in June 1943. Herb served in the US Army Medical corp. during WWII and was honorably discharged in October 1947. He went on to graduate from Simmons School of Embalming, Syracuse in 1948.

He served his apprenticeship and passed the state board in July 1951, while working with the Horn Funeral Home in Pawling, NY for 7 years. He was a licensed manager of funeral homes in Amenia, Millerton and New Paltz and then he went to work for Perrotts Funeral Home in Newburgh in October 1961 serving there until Mr. David Perrott sold the business in 1975. He then became the sole embalmer for Coloni Funeral Home, New Windsor, NY until he retired in January 1991. He then worked for Brooks Funeral Home, Newburgh, NY until giving up his license due to blindness in July 2010.

Herb is survived by his daughter Carolyn and her husband, Ed Krogulski of North Carolina; two sons, Peter and his wife, Audra of Washingtonville, NY with which he lived and William and his wife Joanne of Pawling, NY; three grandchildren, Ashley, Thomas and Logan.

Family and friends are invited from 5-8pm on Friday, October 27, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11:30 am on Saturday, October 28 at the funeral home.
