You need to spend money to save money. At least that's the idea behind a pricy upgrade to power lines bringing electricity into the Hudson Valley.

Daily Energy Insider reports that the New York State Public Service Commission has approved $400 million for upgrades that will allow more renewable energy to flow into the Hudson Valley.

The upgrades will mostly go to the completion of the New York Energy Solutions Transmission Project. The 54-mile electrical transmission line will run from a new switching station in Rensselaer County to the Hudson Valley. The 345 kV line will bring power to the Pleasant Valley substation in the Town of Pleasant Valley. If all goes to plan, the line will start pumping power into the area by 2023.

State officials hope that this mammoth investment into the transmission project will stimulate job growth, reduce environmental and health impacts, improve reliability, and lower costs. The new line is also expected to increase the ability for local power to withstand storms.
