Dangerous cold and high winds are blasting the Hudson Valley which could lead to downed trees and power outages in the area.

Forecasters are calling for single digit temperatures in most areas, with wind chills of -15 to -40 degrees in parts of the Hudson Valley on Monday.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the mid and lower Hudson Valley until Monday evening. With the wind chill factored in, it will feel like -15 to -30 degrees.

The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, officials say.

According to the National Weather Service, northwest winds will whip at speeds of 20 to 30 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH.

Those strong winds may blow down iced over limbs, trees and power lines. Power outages are expected, officials say.

A Wind Chill Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph or gusts of 46 to 57 mph, are expected or occurring.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Warning for Sullivan County and the upper parts of the Hudson Valley. Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 40 below zero are expected in those areas. Frostbit on exposed skin can occur in as little as 10 minutes, officials say.

A Wind Chill Warning means the combination of very cold air and the wind will create dangerously low wind chill values. Frostbite can occur quickly and even hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken, according to the National Weather Service.
