I have always felt that it isn't what you spend on Valentine's Day that matters but the thought you put behind the gesture. When you ask someone to be your Valentine it is implied that you are going to receive something even if it is just a card. Valentine gift giving goes way back especially the card concept. According to StreetDirectory.com the first know Valentines card was sent out in 1415 and flower giving has been around since the 17th century.

Now that you have some background I want to get back your budget. I recently saw a story on the news that claimed fewer people are celebrating Valentine's Day much less buying a gift. But those that will partake in Thursday's festivities will apparently spend more then people have in the past. That got me thinking about whether or not you have to spend a lot or maybe just a little to make your Valentine happy. The answer I came up with is it isn't how much you spend, it is all about what you give.

Let me give you an example. I love flowers and roses are beautiful. Receiving a big bouquet of Roses would be sweet but receiving a bouquet of Snapdragons is more my speed. You see I like Snapdragons. Going out for a fancy dinner say at The Would or Garvin's would be great but a Five Guys Burger might fit better into a week night celebration. Oh did I mention that I prefer to celebrate on the actual day as opposed to the closest weekend. And no one could say "No" to Krause's chocolate but your really don't need a whole box.

So you get the gist of where I am going with all of this Valentine conversation. Take a moment to think about the fact that Thursday someone you love will be hoping you make a gesture and keeping it simple could be better than sweating the big stuff. Of course if your Valentine is the Kim Kardashian type forget everything I just told you and I hope you have saved for something expensive.
