A 19-year-old girl who was wanted by Town of Newburgh police for prostitution was arrested in Liberty with a large quantity of heroin on her, authorities said.

On Sunday, Sullivan County Sheriff's Office deputies stopped a vehicle on State Route 17B in Mongaup Valley for a traffic violation. During the stop, a passenger in the vehicle, 19-year-old Nicole Carlaftes, of Liberty, allegedly gave a fake name. Carlaftes was recognized as a former student from Liberty by a school resource officer who stopped to assist.

Police say an investigation revealed that Carlaftes gave a false name because she had an outstanding warrant for prostitution in the Town of Newburgh.

“At the time of her arrest, Carlaftes had 96 decks of heroin on her person,” Sheriff Michael Schiff said in a press release. “Our Gang Intelligence and Narcotics Unit interviewed her and determined that she had travelled to Paterson, New Jersey that day and bought two bricks of heroin."

Carlaftes was charged with the criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and criminal possession of a narcotic drug, felonies. She was arraigned in the Town of Thompson Court and sent to the Sullivan County Jail in Lieu of $25,000 bail.

The driver of the vehicle was issued a traffic citation and released.
