Sofia Kapogiannis passed peacefully in her sleep at her home on Sunday, August 13, 2017 in Poughkeepsie, NY.
She was born in her beloved mountainous village of Levidi, Tripolis, Greece on March 23, 1935, the fourth of four children. The daughter of Maria and Theodore Kallimanis, she married Theodore Kapogiannis in Levidi, Greece on March 26, 1961, and immigrated to the United States, settling in Poughkeepsie, NY.
It was there that she raised her two children and lived for 55 years. Over these years, she had worked at Bond Clothing Company, Schatz Federal Bearings, and IBM East Fishkill, from which she retired.
She was a devoted servant of Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church, attending services, making prosforo for the October liturgies, and volunteering to bake pastries and make loukoumades for each festival for the community to enjoy.
When she was not working, she was always busy creating a comfortable home for her family, who brought great joy to her life. She tirelessly prepared traditional food for loved ones each holiday for all to gather. She also would enthusiastically make Greek cookies and pastries for friends, neighbors, and coworkers during the holidays, as she was a talented baker and that was one of her passions.
Her later years were blessed with twin grandchildren whom she loved dearly. To her family, she was the pillar and heart of the home, providing a warm and loving life. Even in the years of her declining health, her presence alone brightened the day and lightened the load of everyone who interacted with her. She continued to convey and show her love with her warm, expressive eyes and smile.
She is survived by Theodore, her husband of 55 years, her daughter Maria of Poughkeepsie, her son Chris and daughter-in-law Demetra of Lagrange, and precious grandchildren Theodore and Sophia.
She is also survived by her sister Aggeliki, of Tripolis, Greece, and many beloved sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law , cousins, nieces and nephews, in both the United States and Greece.
To her husband, children and all her loved ones, she leaves a void in their lives, but wonderful memories to cherish from the deep love that they shared.
