Snowmobile Rider Dies In Accident In Ulster County

An Ulster County native died in a snowmobile crash on Sunday, Dec. 19, according to the NJ Herald.

Police say Daniel Petras was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Rosendale. He was 25 years old.

Petras was riding his snowmobile without a helmet, according to the article. It has not been stated if a helmet would have saved Petras' life.

Petras collided with 23-year-old Joshua Bennett, who was riding an ATV. Bennett drove into Petras' path. Bennett was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The crash occurred on private land in Rosendale.

According to researcher Joseph Pierz from Oneida Healthcare Center, snowmobile accidents cause about 200 deaths each year and 14,000 injuries annually. The average snowmobile can weigh 600 pounds and drive as fast as 90 miles per hour. Alcohol, inexperience, excess speed and poor judgment the leading causes of snowmobile accidents.
